Solitude
by Shahinur Islam

We are born alone, live alone, and die alone though other hands are involved in us. Solitude is our constant and inevitable companion. To put it in other terms, we are born helpless, live helpless, and die helpless. Nothing or nobody can help us in the absolute term though no efforts are apparently spared.
Solitary is that person who has no kindred-spirit. Solitude endows us a deeper sense of life and world. The lonelier, the deeper. Crowds may give materials, but it unifies them. It conducts knowledge to wisdom and sagacity through perseverance and meditation just as the turbulent water gets static and crystal clear after much time of zero activity resulting in a clear view of the water body. Solitude also provides a complete sense of life like this. Buddha got enlightened in solitude, and Hazrat Mohammad also resorted to the Hera for perfection in solitude. We can measure the extent of loneliness of God through the Universe. To do something good or bad, we need solitude. So robbers or saints- all need it to plan and execute their tasks. For atonement, it is a prerequisite; for realization, it precedes everything; and for creation it is mandatory. All the good and bad deeds of a life or a single day are projected on the projector of seclusion. Then they are filtered by the mind of the person in seclusion as per the temperament of the individual and the spur of the moment.  It helps dovetail the nuances and subtleties of life. Thus it provides us with not a part but a whole. And the whole lessens extremity, clears off confusion, and sets up stability.
The greater, the lonelier. For no company is found at this stage though frequently sought. So a sense of misunderstanding, which yawns the gulf, grows among the commons. A banyan tree is characteristically alone. Other creatures live in it. It holds many, but they are not its peers. Thus it stands alone. The sage also holds many, and is recourse for many, but s/he lives alone.
The higher, the lonelier. For very few people can soar higher and higher just like a vulture which goes up and up in the sky where other species of birds cannot reach. That is why, vultures live alone and isolated unlike other birds which have no ability to go that far.
Thus solitude is a boon to some people who know how to harness it in life. But it may stand as a bane to many if they are allergic to it. This species is surely afraid and anxious of it as they don’t know how to make the best use of it in life. To them, it is useless, and bears no value. There is no greater punishment to this type than solitude.
But excessive solitude makes man unsocial, self-centred and somewhat selfish. Lifelong seclusion makes one self-conscious indeed, but may not make other people conscious. Indulgence in it hinders spontaneity and naturalness, though that loss is offset by some extra-ordinary power or prowess.
However, in some phase or other in life, willingly or unwillingly, everyone experiences loneliness. Sometimes it is monotonous and tiresome; sometimes it is pleasing and enjoyable. Before we come to and after we go out of the world, we were and will be in seclusion. So solitude in this life is a continuity of before and after life.
Observation of life in solitude imparts life a whole view just in the same way as watching of play staying outside the sideline gives the opportunity to observe it wholly. For this there lies a fear of missing details, but the totality is not ignored.

Everything appears lonely, and so heavy in micro-view or close-up view while everything is cluttered in macro-view.

Report: Behaviour in Workplace

by Shahinur Islam

A place where people work is usually called a workplace. It, obviously or less obviously, shares some common practices, ideas, values, and habits for workers to do their jobs productively, effectively, and conveniently. This is the trend of corporate culture in today’s globalized business world. But as the business is spreading across the globe—neither confined to a region nor to a country, it involves more people from different backgrounds, cultures, languages, and religions. Therefore, the behaviour in workplace has also changed, and still is changing tremendously. We know everything needs to be redefined for fulfilling the demands of the new age. So is true of behaviour in today’s workplace. Now let’s explore it against the context of multicultural business environment in Canada.

Though Canada is a multicultural country, she needs to increase productivity and creativity through her workplace. But it is not easy to determine when people of different cultures, languages, and opinions migrate here. On the other hand, it is a prerequisite to share some common practices and values in workplace. So what should be its behaviour traits in workplace? Although workplace culture is not the same in every organization, there are some basic behaviour patterns shared across the country. In our social, cultural, familial, or political life, we expect some common behaviour traits, such as respect, cooperation, positive thinking, etc. Similarly, we expect them in business place. Aside from this, there are some values for a workplace, which have been specified by its workplace manual, or code of conduct book.

To explore the values of workplace behaviour in Canada, some common codes of conduct regardless of any organization are found. For example, there must not be any discrimination irrespective of race, culture, religion, sex, marital status, physical disability, political orientation, or place of origin because it decreases overall productivity and creativity of the employees in an organization. Another example is that violence of any form is not tolerated, that is—to ensure a safer workplace because it also brings about less productivity, and works as a bar to creativity. If any form of violence occurs, it must be dealt with immediately.

To speak of other traits, there are mainly two types of behaviour patterns in workplace in Canada—cultural pattern and pure business behaviour pattern. The cultural pattern of behaviour springs from the cultural values, tradition, and attitudes of the Canadians practiced for a long time.

Both pure business behaviour pattern and cultural behaviour pattern are equally important. They are valued all over Canada. Cultural behaviour includes greetings, pleasantries, addressing, etc. To elaborate it further, first comes greetings, that is, employees should shake hands when they first meet someone or before meetings and interviews. ‘Good morning/afternoon’ is also a good practice with someone they meet regularly. Canadians usually call people by their first name, particularly after they get to know one another, though when they meet someone for the first time, it is expected to address him or her by Mr. or Ms. So is true when they write emails or letters for business or official purposes. And in some professions, it is common to refer to professionals such as doctors, lawyers, teachers, etc. by their last name or Mr. Ms. or Dr. Second comes the verbal communication. That is, a small talk is common in the workplace, in which people discuss everyday matters, such as weather, family, sports, or entertainment. But they usually do not discuss their personal information, such as religion, salary, or age. They also consider it a bad manner when someone interrupts people in a conversation to change subjects. The last point is non-verbal communication or body language. That is, eye contact throughout a conversation is highly valued as it shows the listener’s interest and attention towards the speaker. And for personal space, one should not move any closer than an arm’s length from another person’s body (The Canadian workplace, n.d.).

Like cultural behaviour pattern, business has also its own values, habits, attitudes, and codes of conduct in its workplace. First of all, the employees are expected to be punctual, to be aware of and carry out their roles and responsibilities properly. Second, they should know how to work as team members and know how to work as an independent member, in which they will show their initiative and proactive role in every step. Because Canadian culture is highly individualistic, employees are expected to make independent decision-making rather than group-consultation. Besides, looser and less permanent relationships are expected between people compared to other cultures. They also prefer direct praise and criticism rather than indirect ones. Third, they will make suggestions and ask questions when necessary because it empowers them and makes them feel the company of their own. Fourth, their attitudes towards work and time incorporate a strong division between personal and professional life, an emphasis on deadlines rather than relationship, a stress on punctuality. The last point is that coworkers will maintain informal work relationship. In other words, they lay stress on equal opportunity, uttering “no” directly, putting emphasis on accomplishments over family background, titles, age, or gender (Canadian Workplace Culture, n.d.).

To conclude, like any other country, Canada has its own cultural and workplace values. As she has retained her own traditional values through cultural practices, she has also responded to the call of multicultural demands which are necessary for maintaining peace and harmony in social and national life, for smoothing creativity and productivity in business and workplace, and for balancing personal and professional life. Workplace behaviour here is not the same as it was years ago, and it will not be the same in future as well, especially for speedy advancement of technology, globalization, and immigration. Therefore, to keep pace with all her aspects, such as business, globalization, immigration, national solidarity, domestic progress, international relations, etc. Canada has adapted herself to the changing trends. However, behaviour in Canada’s workplace is more flexible, tolerant, and variable, but adaptable.

Report: Social Media Benefits and Risks

Social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, Linkedin, etc. is widely used in today’s social and business world, especially because it is a low-cost but powerful and speedy communication tool, which shares, creates, interacts, exchanges information for people of kindred spirits with far greater reach than traditional media, and thus builds a kind of social relationship among its users. It has some benefits— be it in social life or in workplace. In terms of social relationships, as it is used to augment normal relationship, to stay in touch, so is it used in workplace to enhance customer interaction, greater brand recognition and employee recruitment, increase company’s reputation, expand networks of valuable contracts, and secure new business. However, it has the risks as well both in social life and business life. Its abuse in social interaction may worsen the relationships among friends, involve them in conflicts, and as a result, may block them forever. Similarly but with horrendous consequences, its (ab)use in workplace tends to leak data, propagate malware, infringe privacy, waste valuable office time, behave unprofessionally, post financial or confidential company information, and make negative comments about the company, and  the resultant termination from the job place.

In Canada like all other technologically developed countries, workplace has been leveraging new and innovative ways to boost its economic growth and success. And one of those innovative ways is social media like Facebook, Twitter, etc. which is used to promote the company’s business and impart training and development for its employees. It is feared that those who are not using social media in today’s business will lag behind because it communicates updated information swiftly, and as a preferred medium of communication it will take the place of email in near future.

A study reveals that more than 35% Canadian executives in today’s workplace think social media as a great opportunity for their business and make a greater use of it. A total of 39% believes it to be a necessity, and 72% were planning to invest more in social media in 2012. It is seen now as a unique skill, not just a hobby. Around a third of Canadian executives feel that social media experience is at least as significant as speaking a second language and gathering international experience while employing new people. More than a half executives feel that social media may be beneficial in increasing brand awareness. Less than one fifth (17%) of executives reports that gaining a deeper understanding of their customers was the main benefit of using social media. Recruitment of top talent is cited as one of the top five benefits (21% of respondents) of using social media for a company. Only 5% think the main benefit of social media is the opportunity to monitor how a company’s brand is being perceived (Canadian executives’ perceptions of social media in and out of workplace, n.d.).

As social media shows so much importance in workplace, what are the benefits of using it? Of course, the first benefit is its low-cost and speedy communication. Besides, it helps to find support when employees are in a problem. It also empowers employees. Furthermore, it teaches collaboration and provides international experience without traveling the world, and that is why, it is a way of learning. It helps create a very positive image of the company, the employees, and employers as well. Social media is also used as an advertising platform where company products can be publicized. In addition, it can also be used as a notice board where different announcements about the company can be updated every now and then.

In my opinion, if social media has so many benefits in workplace, why not use it for the economic growth and success of a company? But I think we have to use it carefully with some codes of conduct laid down by the company.

However, social media has some risks too. To know further, let’s study some cases happened in Canada’s Ontario, British Columbia, and Alberta. Two employees of West Coast Mazda in Ontario were terminated for a series of “offensive, insulting and disrespectful” Facebook postings. The company’s manager who was a Facebook friend with them felt disturbed at their postings targeting management, the business, and the products sold by the company. The same case was also found in Alberta where an administrative employee in the Alberta Public Service was dismissed after her employer could know the writings of her personal blog which contained “unflattering comments about a number of her co-workers and management”. In a different case of British Columbia, an employee was discharged for the contents of his blog consisting of “violent fantasies and racist comments” and terming the company as the blogger’s employer. Though it was argued that the blog postings happened entirely off-duty, the arbitrator countered that there was “a connection between the blogging and the business interests of the company” ( Jennifer & Waggott, 2013).

To show further risks besides dissmisal from jobs,  using social media in workplace can be addicting and distracting, which will call for less productivity of the company’s economic growth and business success. Its overuse may hamper normal pattern of sleep which tends to impact the following day’s work. If someone before employment posts something vulgar, offensive, insulting, racial, the employer may google it and turn down him or her.

Of course, like anything else in our life, social media has some risks as well. But I think we have to use it carefully. I also think that if we do not use it because of its greater risks in our workplace, we will only deprive ourselves of the blessings of sophisticated technology today. It is not technology which is responsible for any harm or danger; rather, it is we who are responsible for the way we use it.

To conclude, because using social media in workplace is a cheap and fast way of communications, we have no other option left but to use it constantly for reaping economic benefits of a company. But keeping its risks in mind, we have to carefully leverage it in our workplace as the slightest mistake can invite greater danger and harm than we can think when we use it. To prevent this, a company should make some rules of using social media in workplace. Only then we can utilize it for our maximum benefits.

Trends in Today's Workplace

 Activity 1

Every age has its own characteristics and trends which affect almost all the areas of life and world—whether it is art, literature, trade, or commerce, or even our quotidian life. Similarly, business is not out of it. While it once preferred multi-level management and hierarchical design—in other words—vertical structures, nowadays it has turned its focus on horizontal structures, especially because of globalization, multiculturalism, and state-of-the-art technology. In my view, horizontal structures are better than vertical ones for some reasons. First of all, they flatten the organizations by minimizing the distance among employees. Secondly, they help the companies compete more effectively. Thirdly, they allow teamwork in an organization, which accelerate its productivity. Fourthly, they make it easy to take decision through some delegation in a large company. Last of all, they are more adaptable in a rapidly changing environment of today’s business. To speak volume for my arguments, some of the success stories like All4 and dealer.com stories can be read.

Activity 2

Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) is the largest bank of Canada, which has 80,000 full-time and part-time employees and serves more than 15 million clients mostly in North America, though the service is also available almost all over the world. It functions through some business segments: Personal and Commercial Banking, Wealth Management, Insurance, Investor and Treasury Services, and Capital Markets. Over the last twenty years, RBC has been operating through electronic delivery channels with a view to creating conveniences for its clients, so it has automated its branch activities and provided wireline and wireless telephone banking, and is also continuing refining online banking services. In addition, it maintains the technological device for which every employee, regardless of his or her location, has to abide by its code of conduct and fully comprehend his or her role in such areas as the appropriate collection and use of client information, the prevention of money laundering, vigilance against terrorism financing, and the avoidance of bribery.

Alcoa produces and manages primary aluminum and alumina; it has 61,000 employees in 31 countries and revenues of approximately US$ 25 million in 2011. It offers one-stop service in design, engineering, and production; its products are used across the globe in motor vehicles, containers, buildings, aircraft, and in many industrial products and consumer commodities. Its main operating segments are research and development, mining, refining, smelting, fabrication as well as recycling. Alcoa started it journey in 1886 when Charles Martin Hall, a chemist and mineral enthusiast invented a technology to produce aluminum. Technology has made it possible that aluminum can be recycled. Recycling aluminum saves 95% of the energy for making new metal; furthermore, it lessens s the need for solid waste landfill sites. The use of aluminum compounds has made things easier, safer, more reliable, more cost effective, more durable, more resistant to corrosion, especially to motor vehicles, food and beverage packaging, architectural products, aerospace components, and pharmaceutical products.
It is obvious from the overview of both companies that they have used technology tremendously, and thus they have experienced its huge impacts in their services and operations. RBC has been operating its business activities almost all over the world. In so doing, it cannot go a long way without the help of technology. For example, without technology it cannot sustain its productivity as well as success, and it cannot maintain its contact and relation with other employees working all over the world. Similarly, technology has also changed the productivity of the other company, namely Alcoa—which is itself a technology, because it produces and manages aluminum which is used in other products such as motor vehicles, food and beverage packaging, architectural products, aerospace components, making them easier, lighter, more cost-effective, and more durable. To conclude, technology has contributed to the development, success, and productivity of both companies to a great extent, though at their inception they could not go a long way as technology that time was not so sophisticated.

Activity 3

Nobody can teach you anything unless and until you tend to learn something. Likewise, in voice with Miller, I would like to maintain that “you can’t motivate someone who doesn’t want to be motivated.”  What can you do then if you can’t motivate someone when you need to? The answer is you can at best create the suitable environment with all elements of motivating the person. And it will work slowly through some situations when the person to be motivated undergo.

But what are the most likely factors that motivate a person like me? I think, like Miller, they can be, in a word, intrinsic motivation. To elaborate it, first, as an employee I need all the necessary tools and technology, and expertise to execute the task assigned to me. Second, I expect the employer will also judge or view things from my point of view. Third, I must have choices to make. Fourth, I must be treated as a human being with all my faults and virtues, not as a machine with perfection every time. Fifth, I should have some opportunities for discovering my authenticity. Sixth, the motivation should also aim to create job satisfaction. Seventh, my professional life and personal life should be balanced. Finally, I must be evaluated and promoted in accordance with my performance.

On the other hand, one of the least factors of motivating me is competition, in which I am asked and forced to sell some products within a period of time. The next factor is compensation which may activate me but does not motivate me. Aside from this, the overwhelming factor is disciplinary action. Of course, I must undergo any punishment if I do something wrong, but I have to be warned first and given an opportunity to correct myself.

Activity 4

Change is the order of the day, but we have to fit in it in such a way that brings about good to both employees and employers—whether it is a unionized or nonunionized business organization. Once human beings mastered many manual skills, such as weaving clothes by hand, setting fire by rubbing stones, etc. However, such skills were replaced with technology, and the humans who only learned new technology survived later. Therefore, that the author of the article has stressed the non-unionizing trends of business today is not a far cry. Here, I would like to echo Sylvie Lavoie who maintains, “We can’t regret trying to make our lives better”.

It is true that a union workplace ensures increasing security of the job and decent wages, but the companies must have work for the way they can make profit. Therefore, a non-union workplace may have some benefits if the employers abide by the state and company rules to pay the wages and other benefits to their employees because it often happens that the employees of a union workplace strike for a trivial issue making the company incur a great loss. To conclude, I would like to pronounce Greek philosopher Plato’s “Law is unnecessary if the king is virtuous; law is useless if the king is not virtuous.” Similarly, union or non-union will not work if nobody respects each other, and the employers themselves are corrupted and exploitative.

Activity 5

I cannot generalize that employees are more attracted and committed to socially responsible companies. Actually, it depends on the individual’s mental disposition, taste, upbringing, mind-set, as well as familial and social values. But as general people we expect others to be so whether we ourselves are committed to such companies or not. In fact, many employees are not concerned with whether the companies are socially responsible or not; they are concerned only with their decent wages and job security more than anything. If they are paid decently, then only some of them may pay attention to this aspect of the company, and that too depends on the factors I mentioned in the beginning.

Personally, I am attracted and committed to socially responsible companies only if my wages are decent because I have to maintain living and other costs of my family and myself. I am always attracted to socially responsible companies, but only committed to them only if the family demands are met with the wages I receive from them. The reason is that, besides being an individual, I am part of society; I have some responsibilities to it. So if I can perform those responsibilities through my employment, then I think it is excellent—just like killing the two birds with the same stone.

Activity 6

Both social innovation and sustainable innovation are similar and different as well in at least three ways. To find their similarities, first, both of them resolve social, cultural, and environmental challenges. Second, both work for public good.  Finally, they also share some common strategies, ethics, and pragmatism. However, to speak of their three differences, first, social innovation tends to change more and keep pace with the changes by applying new strategies, concepts, and organizational charts than sustainable innovation. Second, social innovation can occur in the for-profit, non-profit, or public sectors whereas sustainable innovation happens in the for-profit sectors. Finally, social innovation occurs best in diverse environments, especially in peripheral structures while sustainable innovation takes place best in homogeneous structures.

I agree with CSI’s theory of change which functions in the spaces where different people, projects, and organizations find their own, and for this, it starts at the bottom concentrating on the physical space.  I think it is a good start because what we need first to do something is to create a space which admits many people. Then it goes to the level of “community”.  In my view, it is also a good continuity because it targets a group of people who later becomes a community. The last stage is innovation, which is also good, because innovation only occurs when some people find a space and work together. To conclude, I agree with all the consecutive stages of pyramid model, which is a scientific and age-befitting theory in business world.

Activity 7

All the training programs Pacific Adventure Website offer are more or less appealing to me. For example, to engage and retain my talent in workplace, I like Employment Engagement Training; to have shared goals and communicate with and support each other, I like Team Building Training; to engage and evoke conversation and self-discovery on my leadership attitudes as an individual, I like Leadership Development Training. But the most appealing training of them to me is Change Readiness Training because I need to understand the future changes before I experience them so that I can be prepared, and they can bring about positive and productive results; because I need to broaden my thinking horizon, evoke conversation, and revitalize my sense of leadership; because I can be equipped for the future and work accordingly at present for more personal, social, and organizational benefits.

Based on the results of taking the online “Abilities” skills quiz, I find the same Change Readiness training program most beneficial because, as I maintained earlier, I need to think diversely, grow abilities to predict the future trends, stimulate conversation, and rejuvenate my spirit of leadership.

Activity 8

“Don’t judge a book by its cover” is an issue to be considered the next. But first comes “First impression is the best impression.” We usually judge people by our first impression; this is our psychology. So I do not agree with the writer’s acceptance. I think the new employee should have embraced the existing culture of the business and made more of an attempt to “fit in” because we are accustomed to viewing employees like this as general customers or clients. However, that does not mean that the new employees cannot have individuality and self-expression of their own generation. Of course, they should have, but this should be in an acceptable manner with the prevalent culture of the business.

When I was a teacher at a college, I confronted such a situation in which I kept my hair long. This situation did not fit in my then work environment, so I had to have my hair trim in accordance with the instructions of the college. I accepted this because I knew I had to fit in the existing work environment. Or else, it might harm my career, or the institution I worked with.

Activity 9

In the present age, there is no denying the position of the author that mobile phones have blurred the lines between our personal and work life. In fact, they are now essential parts of our life almost like other basic demands of humans. But there goes a proverb “Excess of anything is very bad.” Excessive use of mobile phones impacts badly our health, economic success, and invaluable time; it also creates imbalance in work plan, paradoxically alienates ourselves from friends and family, and makes us self-centred. Of course, mobile phones have intruded in our private life alongside with our professional life as the author exemplified in the article. Their boon has turned into a bane in our life, and vice versa as well. I have also experienced their boon and bane in my life, which dimmed the line of my personal and professional life. Though I use my mobile phone less on talking, usually ten minutes a day, I spend more time, usually on checking my emails, surfing facebook, using blackboard, and browsing web, usually four hours a day.

To sum up the results of my challenge, I spend four hours and a half on an average on my mobile phone. In so doing, my work and school are considered equal, and the results back up the claims made the author in her article. My mobile phone has intruded in my professional and personal life. I have been dependent on it, but I fear if I am becoming a slave to it.

Activity 10

I agree with the views the author hold in the article. In health issues, no religion, no race, no colour, or no age bar should be treated in a double-standard. In fact, gone are those days when medical treatment was a special privilege for the monarch and the like. Now we are living in a democracy where people elect their own ruler who is instrumental in distributing equal benefits to the people of all strata. And we know people contribute to the overall development of a country, but unhealthy people cannot. Therefore, if there are any root causes to flaws of treatment, they must be traced, and steps should be taken to root them out in order to ensure overall fair treatment.

Ethics in Computing Culture

Codes of Conduct in Personal and Professional Life

In today's world, we have various people of various professions with the advancement of technology. In fact, we are bound to enter new professional world as a result of diversification of life and world. But owing to globalization, new professions are going to all over the globe. Therefore, to retain harmony of work, to deal with people smoothly, to maintain the interest of the majority people-- if not all-- we should have some codes of conduct which we are bound to follow for the greater interest. This is why, I think, even in today's globalized world, the codes of conduct are relevant. Obviously, I follow some personal codes of conduct. For example, I never try to harm others deliberately, wish the good people all the best, help my family, friends, or others as my level best, and follow a positive attitude in life. But to speak of some other people I know, yes, there are some who live by an unusual codes of conduct such as- not even deceiving, or doing harm to, or avenging the person by whom he has been victimized. Just like the personal principles, we must abide by some professional codes of conduct because, we know, people come from different backgrounds, cultures, religions, and mindset in today’s world. Therefore, to do the same work, professional people should be united in one place-- workplace, that is, they have to keep in mind that they are simply other people in workplace, and forgetful of personal identity which better applies in personal life. There are some professions that have mandatory codes of conduct such as- lawyers, physicians, military personnel, etc. But every profession, I think, should follow more or less some codes of conduct because without principles or codes, professional people cannot organize things, accomplish the assigned tasks smoothly, and bring a bad result in the end.
Now I am pointing to a surprising aspect of Hippocratic Oath or codes of conduct followed by physicians or health care professional in the Old Age. One of the principles maintains:
                           “ I will not give to a woman an abortive remedy.”
                                                                  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hippocratic_Oath

This aspect of Hippocratic Oath is surprising and shocking as well because at that time women were to suffer a lot for an unwelcome pregnancy.
Bionic Legs in Sport

"...bionic legs used in a competition should be set to perform at the median level of performance exhibited by able-bodied athletes in the previous year's competition." I basically disagree with the statement, but slightly agree on some conditions. To explain my disagreement, let's think for a moment why and between whom we hold a sport competition. It is held usually between more or less equal contestants; if it is not so, we cannot call it a competition. Even if we call it a competition, it does not provide us satisfactory entertainment or amusement; it spoils the spirit of sports of the viewers. Hence, if competition aims at amusing us viewers, the introduction of bionic legs in sports competition dampens the spirit and amusement, indeed.
However, keeping in mind the best athletes who have, accidentally or incidentally, lost their normal legs, sports authorities can allow them to set bionic legs with only the power that reflects their previous year's performance, not more or less than that. Again, my preceding argument can be presented here in an another way that the competition between natural legs and unnatural legs is not natural at all, if there is no humanitarian reason grounded on it.

Free Speech and Hate Speech

What we call "Free Speech" is not free at all. It does not indicate absolute freedom. Even if someone is thought to be free in some case, he or she has always some restrictions and limitations as he or she has to live in a community, a society, a country, or even in a world where other people of either the same culture or race, or language live. It applies not only to a person but also to a race, nation or country. What is free in absolute sense, may cause harm to others. This way, no person can enjoy absolute freedom in his or her speech. He or she must draw a line lest it should lead to a hate speech. Now the question arises where to draw the line? The answer obviously depends on the situation a person gets into. No law or rule can define, limit or restrict it narrowly. But it can be defined in a broader way as we see in the constitutional laws of a country. Therefore, Free Speech is Hate Speech when it harms to or provokes the people, the community, the race, etc. Here it goes with the moral theory of "Cultural Relativism", which "holds that no valid rational criterion for determining the right thing to do exists." And actions are judged on the accepted values or criteria of a society or culture.
As we have to live in a community, a society, a country, or even in a multicultural world, we do not have any right to unleash terror or trigger clashes between the two peoples, two countries or two religions, and disturb the peace and harmony prevailing for ages with themselves. Most of the people of the world are peace-loving, so they should not be infuriated by one's unbridled free speech, even if they live with some superstitions. But if you wish to break their superstitions, and bring out the truth before them, you should do it in diplomatic or strategic language, not in the free speech. Hence, Free Speech must be bridled on the context of the situation arising in some cases. Here we can bear in mind the theory of "Act Utilitiarinism", which views that "Each act is to be evaluated morally according to the degree to which it increases or decreases overall human happiness."
Or else, Free Speech can lead to some fatal consequences. For example, it can disturb peace and harmony in a community as mentioned earlier; it can also cause conflicts and war even; last but not the least, it can result in sufferings of some people, or even killings of some valuable lives.
However, freedom of expression can, in no way, be suppressed in the name of banning Hate Speech. If so, we cannot say what we feel about our life, governance; our ruler or boss will be more autocratic; and one day we will lose our democracy, and return to the medieval period when common people had no right to say anything against the ruler or the monarch. We will again be enslaved in our thoughts and expressions. That will be a great loss to us.

Yet Another

Under this sky there is yet another one
that is variably coloured and placed closer.
You just couldn’t get lost in its moon and stars;
that is why its sweet songs are played somewhere else.

Excluding all seas there is yet another one
which overflows when it cries.
You just swam in the water of all seas
but didn’t know they were full to the brim with its water.

Close to this land there is yet another one
where harvest grows, and flowers blossom.
You just didn’t farm flowers as you wish;
so you went on blundering with all its sun and rain.

Across the Body of the Night Catching Fire in her Blood

Across the body of the night
that catches fire in her blood
there will be no more cold rainfall—
and she knows it.
In the hot wind of the burnt mind,
there will blow in more and more fire
only in the flickering flames.
Her soul then will rush to and fro
as ants are washed away by flood;
yet she will find no safe haven
anywhere just to place her soul.
At this hour who will look for her
and take her closer to his breast
with the hands extended to her
so as to rouse her expectations?
It appears to her the darkness
that is ignited in despair
is much more unendurable
than her death even.
Let the whole world know it—
not any heart ever longs
to be lighted in the heated light
of the burning season.
So the heart of the night values
her darkness above such a light.

The Engrossed Body of the Undressed Night

Look at the engrossed body of the undressed night
how the gentle wind touches the ice-heart,
and how it climbs the butter-tender domes
and how two desires meet up at their peaks.
And when the fragrance of granite becomes strong,
the spoiled heart forgets its sorrowfulness
and longs to be spoiled in more fragrance.
In this state of adequate happiness
it seems to be immersed and die.
Such a death rouses another thirst
in the parched breast of the earth.

However much the two desires are met at their peaks,
the trap of god has never been known to have failed;
this ascent and descent go on
with showers of sparks life-long.
They just stop once for all
when shrouded in white dress
and numbed by powerlessness.

Beyond the Scene

The life that roams about beyond the scene,
beyond the limitless bank— in the dark
lays eggs and in the womb of the night brags
to see the baby of the golden age;
the life that puts aside days and adores
or still prays for nights, is uncaught lifelong,
a bait of cheats, a colourful cover—
which holds the cosmic darkness, the black hole.
It’s magic from the scene for the unseen.
The greed for unseen life snatches the youth
offered in cash in the grove of honey;
the lovers of the city just come back
with naked hands and sink into the dark
in the unbearable and painful nook.
Then that life makes no difference with that
which goes on with worshiping the darkness.
Such a life is for all time a blossom
unsmelt, untasted and pale in neglect
before it gets withered eternally,
a bath in the puddle of the vast sea
despite its having a pool of water.
Then who is this discolored life lent to
and which rule is laid down to suffocate
and pulverize it between the grinders?

Pleasure-fasting

There is no room left for the ruined body
in our family and our society;
everyone in society longs to live
in possession of the virtuous body
where there is no worth of the ruined body.
Yet there is overdoing with the ruined mind
with which the invalid society now
has unceasing intercourse with no qualms.
But the ruined body bears no worth to man;
yet it is much better than the ruined mind
in its giving of the silent pleasure,
in the songs of all the hearts pressed and ground
by society, in the flood of sorrow
that is sunk at its overflowing bank
while the ruined mind remains only busy
hurting, is set to break mosques and temples,
and to trample over the gardenia
that is come into bud with much effort.

There is leftover odor smeared over
the malnourished body— and it disturbs
the nose of society that is patched up,
but the malnourished mind nourishes it
and does vaunt in the fashion of values.
Sickness never spares this pleasure-fasting
society anyhow where it does rule,
and where even the moonlight is a curse—
virtue lives at its feet and sin on heads.

For the Golden Sun

The night is pregnant with darkness
just to smell the fragrance of light.
One day she embraced the sun’s breast
and was happy for that moment.
She was not her when her body
trembled and was hot in petals
of heart— when the sun went away
to the summer solstice
in the stillness of the late afternoon
and in the bashful solitude,
far away from the multitude
she kissed his eyelids at the bend
of the farthest horizon.
Now she is tired of carrying
the embryo of that pleasure;
so the moments of waiting play
as constant ding-dongs in her breast,
in her visage and in her eyes
in the wrapper of the new pains.
Yet in the beckoning of light
beyond this agony again
her heart just becomes pacified.
In the coming dawn she will bear
the new golden sun from her womb
during this burning season.

The Deer Live in Vain

This world doesn’t hold always good time for deer;
the deer live in vain for greed of green grass
that gives their body healthy nourishment
and makes a heady aroma of it
and exerts a pull on the deadly smell
of the hostile tiger like a magnet.
They aren’t tiger-charmers but easy prey.
They’ve no inhuman weapons like humans;
they’ve no fatty, slow-working, secret tools
that can avenge their enemies like beef,
or no fish bones like chital that can sting
and pinch the throat of man after its death.
Yet the deer live in vain thinking their life
as invaluable as anything.
They just get trapped in mantis deception
of leaves for all time— and in the cover
of deception— Death draws in tiny tints
the dotted spots all over their body.
Yet their desire to live is undying
and eternal— however frivolous
their life is in the world,
or poisonous in a twinkling.

The deer make the scenes of the world pretty
and raise the spirits in all its forests;
everyone lives on the borrowed fragrance
of their burnt hearts. Yet the deer for themselves
live in vain. For the alluring grasses
they sell well their own life gratis to death.
So the deer live in vain;
the deer still have a dance in vain
to the steps, tempos and crescendos of green.

Waiting

As the earth moves round the sun all day long
and at last goes for an assignation
holding the outstretched hand of the twilight,
and finds out that her heart is still beating;
as she is impatient over again
in the night to meet the dawn stealthily
before all the lives of the world wake up,
so we are passionate and impatient
all of the days and nights of our whole life
only to embrace the darkness in light
and the light in darkness in the desire
like gravity force of the universe.
If that desire is abruptly eclipsed,
all the hopes are covered with deep dark clouds,
we acquiesce in pangs of that eclipse
tucking our soul into the sludge of life
with patience of the busy pond-heron.
We’ll meet again at the end of darkness
that splits open out of the breast of dawn.
Then we’ll only talk in a long silence
when the Jamuna of our halting words
that are suspended so far in our life,
merely merges into the estuary;
and then all the currents of our feelings
will do build up a foam-covered ocean
where we can spend at least some of our time
swimming and diving, jumping and plunging
in watery happiness— we’ll divest
of airy, acrid touch and land-grown pain.
Like the earth, we still move about and wait.

Opium Addict

Our ancestors who took opium
given by others, and gave up
their own narcotics for the sake
of existence or mirage-greed
that made them trade over again,
look back only and feel the light
of moving as will o’ the wisp;
and that drunkenness still makes you
move against from top to bottom
and makes itself a scale for you
to gauge all men in your values
that are born-blind, primal and false.
You still look for medication
for all troubles in that opium,
and we living in the margin
are thrown away then to the edge—
farthest— sometimes to the dustbin.

That time is perhaps yet to come
for people living on the edge
when all the power of the centre
budges to the fists of their hands,
when they can live in their own time.
So the plowing of the good time
this time is made in the hard times
and the fertile land is just proved
to be infertile, sterile one.
Yet you don’t want to accept it—
the seeds with insects never yield
the bumper crops; but in the soil
of gold-yielding alluvial plains
you’re still sowing the opium seeds.

The Whirlwind

In the whirlwind does fly the heated sand
of life when the wind lets out a long sigh;
but its desire was to fly as a bird
or as a butterfly from tree to tree,
from flower to flower. But alas! When it flies off,
it stumbles again on the heated sand—
on the sand emerged from spending its life
and the defiant desire impedes only
the tempo and pace of the rest of life.
Thus some fate or other just comes away
and fulfills the desire of flying off.

In the heated puzzle of the bellows
even an iron-life just begins to melt
like the ice at the hands of the blacksmith;
life has known it spending a whole life
melting, rotting and being penniless
in the very bazaar of life and world.
And an investment can only be made
with such a life in being of others
whose bodies consume the higher interest
at the compound rate from bones and marrows
of that life and accumulate fat-rolls.

The Myth of Hermaphrodite

You abuse me and taunt me
and give a wry smile
calling me ‘eunuch’.
For you don’t know
who I am and why I am so.
Listen then! ‘When I was alone
on earth thousands of years ago
I did not like it.
But I had no partner to love
and procreate like yours;
but I had both organs as the self-contained
that I rubbed one winter night
like an earth-worm to feel warm.
Later someday when the earth completed
its rotation once,
I felt my belly growing up
and one day felt labor,
and with the big bang
my little twins came out on earth.
It went on and on
for some generations.
Again by chance
kids as you deformed are
began to be born;
later this stream went on
which you boast of now.
So you say who is to be taunted and laughed at.
Whatever I have in use or not
Is the vestige of what I had.’

Death has No Caste

Death has no caste; life has many—
lofty and low levels, colours,
various tastes, various smells, alleys,
nooks and corners— and the roads rough.
He who walks along the darkness
where lies his crime? All the desires
of the deprived run out serving.
The moon enriched with the riches
of others are fully joyous—
the amazed stars only whisper.
The trees that bear flowers are not
theirs if they are not mature.
So death has no caste— whether it’s
premature or immature death,
whether mature or watery—
everywhere is denial, assault—
everything is forms, vogues of life.
Death is a one-coloured, lonely,
friendless tool, a host in oneself.
All the colours, all the flavours,
all grand arrangements of the life
are blasé to it in a flash;
yet festive mood of work of life
does never come to a finish.
Here it wins, here lies its singing;
So death seems to be gray and pale
to the all-around forms of life.

Checkmate

When the illusive gap is plugged up between life and death,
in the sudden drop of the scenes— all powerful preparedness
disappears forever— as if throwing the cold water
in the blazing bonfire.
This truth of the moment still remains so much true as if
all the grand arrangements of life were overwhelmed to it
in a second.
Yet bonfire burns— it longs for burning everlastingly
by making all the timber-kindling-straw-diesel its fuel,
even by sacrificing itself in the other fire
or else by swallowing up the other fire fearfully.
It longs to burn many more days than the star in the sky
burning for million years more than other luminaries.
But alas! Behind the curtain in unpromising time
who seems to stand at ease and write graffiti on the wall
of some life or other, and as per the direction wall
which compliant slaves equip themselves to obey it always
with the cold water in their hands? Which god orders the pawns
of all lives in the chessboard of the world and still goes on
playing the game as he wishes? And he makes the ill rule
his rule for some reason or other, and rolls down laughing
for all the helpless checkmates of the world!

The Cry of Dove-hearts

Our dove-heart is extinct like dudhraj birds
where lives now a sense of hybridism.
It is, as it were, the cultivation
of eucalyptus in the pitraj land.
Humanity is today a species
that comes to be endangered like doel birds
and is found only in pages of books
and painted as a picture here and there
or a coin of Goura, Pundra period
or else that of the Ashoka regime
lost forever or lain in ceaseless sleep
in some museum— so it bears no value
of its own except historical one.

Whether it’s humanity or dove-heart,
both now seem a pillar-less asylum
of the invalid to power and money,
a pretension to the heavy monsoon
in the blistered land of the worthless mind.
Those who’re crushed in the sick race of the world
those who live in their huts in seclusion
those whose hearts are burdened with refined sense
those whose fathomless mind is a river
where endless streams of perturbed pains still flow,
stand as a shelter in their hearts alone
for them without any prop or support
like a single star gazing from afar,
like a statue without life or ideals.

One Day This Life

One day this life will merge into air silently
in the sudden solar eclipse
in the invitation of twilight
in the wave-less ocean, in the still desert.

No noise will that time sound
melodious or tedious.
No pain will burn the heart;
no love will wet the mind.

Perhaps a tear or two will shed
to ruminate the memory of that life
in a solitary corner of the earth
or the tears will dry in the eyes.

In an idle noon on the sands of the Jamuna
perhaps some memory-vorous, lone swan
will be engrossed in feasting on his memories
or hear some saddened music
in the voice of the dove, in the first pain of Papia.

The lost life still seems to be an absconding prisoner
that borrowed the invaluable life from an unknown usurper.
So before paying it back,
it is now the accused to be hanged.

The Wild Duck in Pain

The wild duck in pain flaps his wings in deep water
and the wind comes to kiss his mild body nonstop
when he bobs up with soft catkin scents on his beaks.
Yet the eyes of the hunter just aim at his breast
for which drunkenness? Deep darkness descends around,
the egrets fly away responding to their flock;
the magical dew fallen on the sands beckons
being at the distance of a life. At that time
the pain-puzzled deaf wild duck fumbles only for
the resonance of his own wings desperately.
It goes in vain— the cry of the night goes in vain
to the ears of the hunter; in the breeze of dawn
perhaps the fragrance of his life will drift no more.
And in the daylight there will not any more flash
all pain and joy of the feathers splashing water.
A memory of unknown time seems to come at last
and asks: where and when have you seen such a darkness?
All the dark nights of the earth gathered together
seem nothing to it— no darkness since earth was born.
The world’s pain seems to touch the body of last pain
in defeat and is floored at its feet pale-faced.
At the night’s first hour, the hunter pulls his trigger;
then the heat of the body of the duck just hides
wholly in the womb of the night in a moment
and all his pain falls along with his last feather.

Women

Women! You are still ornaments
decking only the rooms, door-sills
and beds, wearing blisters in hands
and dreams falling flat on your face
within the boundary of henna
before you have flown far away.
You have measured life with tiaras.
You couldn’t be so much of humans
as of women— remained women.
You’ve mixed your desires with others’,
in the confined room of the males.
Why didn’t you give up the nature
of the gold creepers in the pride
of self-reliance, identity?
You are still moving like a top
around the circle made by men
in its beckoning of pleasure.
You couldn’t be the tools in your life
to change yourselves in society;
you became the tools for others.
But you need not be any arms,
women! Just be your tools to change
yourselves, to go beyond yourselves.
One or two of you have done this,
kissed the peak of the Himalayas,
touched the summits of some others.
But this can alter nothing much.
Change yourselves this time to change all
so that in the grief of rulers
Ashoka faints at Kalinga,
so that with one blow of your breath
the venomous snakes tuck their life
into the holes and ever flee,
so that the primeval woman
can regain her vanished glory
with your efforts and your movement.
Be a pillar for your leaning,
you also have limbs like the males.
As darkness cannot bear the light,
you cannot bear self-reliance too.
Yet just draw the light in darkness—
be lighted just once, there won’t be
darkness that you’ve thought as your fate.
But you should know— like the conquered
you have no glowing history too.
So you make your history this time.
To arouse you, came Rokeya,
Sufia Kamal, that Khona,
Nawab Faizunnessa, also
Jahanara Imam this time
in nooks and corners of Bangla.
But you did not respond to them.
You are still tied to the shackles
of intoxication of yours.
You could not see any beauty
of the earth, not enquire after
any stars; so many events
are happening every moment
that do not echo in your hearts
in jingled tunes, tempos and beats.
You just made a ruined nest in pain
with a whole life squandering.

Reviving the Ruined

O Rain! You drenched much the dry land,
fields, meadows, forests, wilderness
overflowed the ponds, the rivers,
the canals, the fens, the wetlands
for thousand years— sometimes freely
sometimes on the pretext of freaks.
Drench my heart this time as you did
my forefathers to senseless joy,
gave leisure to compose sad songs
for the absence of their dear ones,
to wash away their deep sorrow
to sing in their stentorian voice
Bhatiali, Bhawaiya music
and so many great rainy songs
while riding the raft pushed in floods
or at great adda of full noon.
Drench my mind-desert just like this,
I don’t care about my body.
If you come down, I’ll get— leisure,
freedom from urban rattling tiredness,
fertile laziness. I’ll glean beauties
of life only. My heart has dried
much earlier— but lived as pieces
on a tattered sheet of the world.
Drench me in the sodden leisure.
If my body lives just like this,
my heart will be very short-lived.
And dead heart has nothing to give;
it pulls and drags the rest of life.

Those who can Give Much More

Those who can give much more on earth,
lay down aprons of joy in peace,
give an address in the pure heart
of Nidhubon to be drunk up,
reap harvests in the arid land
with the agro-facts like Khona’s,
be successful well like the sun
in the gracious triumph of last tricks of war
with wailings in the breast of millions
and with the last droplet of their own blood
in hand as a single light in darkness;
why do they sit quietly in a distance
too far beyond the scenes of the known world?
Why do they hide themselves in a dense pique?
And those who only think that pique
to be a feigning of wisdom
clothed in inability,
just don’t know how the present scenes
that rouse pain in the future womb
also play tunes on strings of time—
in the silence of noonday hour,
in the tone of jingling anklets;
burning in pain from side to side at night,
at all the work, at the hearts of the past
around the marrows with the bones crackling
they just burn and burn and make a cinder.

In Quest of Wild Happiness

At the end of the nightlong war comes a shrivelling dawn
shouldering merely a drop of happiness, her image
sitting tight in the ravaged field from far to much farther—
too far— to the hundred more fields; her whole body remains
a thirsty mouth like a dry leaf. A whole cubic heart of pain
is born just as seeds of pomegranate are stored in a whole.
The rest of the day across the grassy field when the sky
is more impudent with someone else, the bad company
of love forfeits the solitude of grass. Then no tapping
of fingers falls on her lips like the second phase of the moon;
On her mahua eyelids shower no kisses in crazy glee.
This time her eyes picture the relief hanging in the tie
of a noose after so many years; and then someone seems
to inaugurate the workshop of sadness in the town
of heart. At that time a fire-beaked bird comes with love of hell,
and without taking her on his wings nips her entire heart
and throws in the parched crematorium unseen so far
as if to burn and enrich the ash-ground for the last time.
But how many days he’s peeped into the yard of her mind!
How much he’s been besotted with the drained delight in her!
How often he has left her alone with the mere fragrance
of shefali after making them fall in the morning
in quest of wild happiness in the missing, cruel forests!

On the Edge of Thirty-Four Years

On the edge of thirty-four years
breaking the trance of the hermit,
you still came to the lap of the refused forest.
You shed suddenly on the awakened mind
left to rot like the fibre of jute giving up its body
to the lap of the silent forest on the edge of thirty-four years.
In the hope of fibre, the heart remained cut off from its breast.
For its stink so many people have often vituperated
secretly or openly.
As you came today at last, O my poesy!
Why so hurry? As long as the breath flies the dust,
stay here to trace the destination of the unseen beauty
in various ways to the earth in the eyes of the hermit.
The world needs you so much today
to light all the ravaged, ragged hearts
in bright sparks amid all grayness.
As you were not here, all the animals still lived
as beasts on the breast of earth.
If they happen to meet any man,
they don’t think they can see a man of the earth,
who is not easily available— so easily
even after ransacking anywhere in the universe.
They are blessed only with eating like animals
dipping their noses in the grassy happiness.
As you came, just stay for at least thirty-four years
on the edge of thirty-four years—
by the time you will make the earth rotate thirty-four times.

Those who have Only Clung around the Craze

Those who have only clung around the craze,
dressed smartly in the fashionable clothes
but afforded not a single moment
to see with their own eyes pains of the age,
have perhaps got the things in profusion
but could not enjoy the endless at all.
So their soulless life lives like the jiol post.
Communion with the endless doesn’t stir them.
With the peel-deep happiness and pleasure
of the unclothed civilization
they have only been enchanted lifelong—
those who are peel-vorous, pleasure-thirsty.
But the peel envelops only the seed
of the real and enraptured happiness.
The pith of civilization doesn’t lie
outside; it lies in the meditation,
in farming the deep field of life and world.
So those who have had a taste of the pith
have the only right to rule for ages
those who have suffered from fads and crazes
and have been affected with delirium.
Yet the delirious are lords in fashion
toeing the line and ruling pith-eaters.
The peel rules the world; the pith does not rule.
And so its broad breast is not embraced yet
by the so far absconding happiness.

In the Glamorous Infatuation with the Estuary

O dear! Let the savings made so far for love
not go in vain by any means this time.
I agree to invest all my capital;
so let not this time go in vain.
Let all my lifespan be over for the moment
if it is over anyhow.
Yet let not such time go in vain, my dear!
I also agree to lose to your love.
Let one say whatever they want to in the name of love.
I just know
that love means losing to the person of love
or losing to someone else for him or her.
So love in loss shines brightly,
if it doesn’t, it’s for the pride of winning.
You just know, dear,
all the elixir of life is stored in the estuary of love
flowing down and oozing from the canal of time
in the glamorous infatuation,
in the burning secrecy
across the body of time.
Let’s revel there in our diving and swimming
and regain the lost time of life with the propitious time.
It’s not the time to be as stupid as apathetic.
Why are your lips still filled up with disgust
to quench the parched thirst?

When You or the World

When you or the world keeps turning down me,
When life denies my happiness deadly,
I enjoy my melancholy with songs
and wallow in silent sorrow that longs
to suck all my pains like sponge,
to take me to the sea of trance to plunge
and lift me from the known to the unknown.
My sorrow then melts into tune alone
with no form like an Indian classic
and makes me a raga that flies birdlike.
I have a musical flight in the sky
sometimes hovering, sometimes soaring high;
no pangs or sorrow can touch me that time
I am above everything in my prime.
O Music! Let me live like this for life
whether it is sorrow, sadness or strife.
For nothing can melt my melancholy
as you do boozily, fiercely, freshly.

Awakenings in the Dark World

The aged moon has grabbed so many days of the fireflies
and making their hearts sink stayed so far for many days.
The fireflies have still given light in the deep darkness.
It has never known after all these days there is a day
that only ignites all the time the rest of the days
engrossed like a dream and in the naked eyes like imagination.
The dance of the dazzling light drifts in the eyes of dreamers,
in the wings of the fireflies.
Before dreaming, one has to burn;
the dreams before burning are never dreams.
Burning only, the dreams talk in melodious music
to man living on earth.
Before it, the aged moon whets our days
on the stones like those of fireflies—
inserts a sword across the throat of all arrangements
in uselessness if necessary in the name of sacrifice.
The need of today sheds all the dreams tomorrow.
So the fireflies shine today in the hopes and dreams of tomorrow
and the rats or mice live only today exhausting all their power.
No day of tomorrow ever heralds the beginning of their day;
it just disappears forever in the abyss of the night.

Such a Time it is Now

Such a time it is now—
the horse licks the pubic hair of the dog;
the dog licks the horse-shoe
and all the rest are just a herd of sheep.

A fox lets out a yelp;
the rest of them form groups
and sing in the same tune—
how far are all the hens?

Crows give a caw—
empty Dhaka;
let’s pull with beaks
all stupid beasts.

In the kingdom of flies and ticks,
all the insects, creepy-crawlies
just reign over in insolence.
And humans are so astonished.

Leeches have come back too.
But it’s not any fun.
Out of water they’ve come
to the dry land of man
and started sucking blood.

Yet the Stars Fall

Stars fall one by one and leave the ashes of pain
in the breast of the dust-covered earth.
They had been shining for millions of years
and spreading light in the universe;
those eyes where that blue light has not reached yet
will never perceive the pain.
The stars have still given light
making themselves impoverished and destitute
for the eyes of the dumb and the dull.
Such stars still fall.

Yet one day like the sun
the stars were eclipsed
in the black shadow of the moon;
men on earth inculcated this only
into their mind with great pleasure,
with the rhythm of perfidy
and let the stigma be known
here and there, this corner and that corner.
And forgot all the loans,
all the pleasure borrowed in their living from the stars.
Such ungrateful men too are there!

It’s Well That I Still Live

Don’t ask me how I am.
It’s well that I still live.
Amid the dusty world, in quest of great beauty
I still go on endless;
it is well.
In the scratches of thorns across the whole body
pain raises my family well.
It’s well that I still live.

Don’t ask me how I am.
Endless wailings each day disconcert all my heart—
peace does remain missing.
Yet it’s well that I live.
Now each and every room is full of restrictions;
there’s no trace of freedom.
It’s well that with this I still live.

Don’t ask me how I am.
Death rules every moment of life
and who knows when it will issue decree!
It’s well that I still live.
On the way of moving I just have a narrow escape,
and then remains only its trace.
It’s well that I still live.

Don’t ask me how I am.
Ram, Rahim, John now live in my memory alone;
they’ve gone to the unknown land.
Yet it’s well that I live.
The few closer people I had live now so far;
my mind bears pangs and pain.
Yet it’s well that I live.

Yet let them live some more time who still do
Yet let Time play some more music on their heart-strings.
Let some more happiness and sorrow make them swing;
let some more pleasure and pain stir waves in them, O forgetful!
There are so many wailings, so many denials, so many pains;
yet let there be some more talks for some more time
and tales of life be written with some more colours of dreams.
Let’s creep up as we wish for some more time, O light-creepers!

The Plates of Lotus Leaves

A couple of plates of lotus leaves are gazing
as if they were sparks of sunlight full of fire
and the white cloud lies in wait all alone
fixing its bright look on the plates
floating alone in a pond at noon
and stretching their body on deep blue water
by borrowing the cunningness of bright sunlight
some fading light at one side hides the rest of the lotus plates
then whose infatuation with delicacies calls for such an invitation?
The clouds seem to be different assassins nowadays
or play too much the game of hide and seek
or else for whom this decking shines
why is he still away, beyond the scene?

Just to Extend Myself

How much more to diminish my life
your hearts will be pleased?
Don’t diminish me any more!
You know diminution causes explosion.
Though I’m like grass,
I’ve desires boundless and ceaseless;
my back is not this time
within the diminution limit—
this time my heart is pasted
to the wall like a poster.
Just let me be free this time like a rocket.
Don’t confine me to your gravity any more.
Don’t think that my life is made up of your dreams and desires
or I’m your obedient slave as per your desire,
as I’ve taken shelter in the corner of your house
like a house-sparrow.

Something seems not to match somewhere!
Yet as a batsman keeps waiting—
sometimes lifelong to match between the bat and the ball;
as the poet keeps waiting
to write his best poem;
as the artist to make his masterpiece;
I’ve clung to waiting
like the persistent bite of an ant
just to extend myself.

The Year before Being the Black Hole

The year before being the black hole,
before burning for the last time
the star Arcturus sought the last refuge
in some heart of the female lovers on earth
in entire reliance.
That unrequited love still moves round the universe
in the utterance of dissatisfaction.
Since then all the hearts of the earth
have still been seeking refuge in other hearts
with the company of dissatisfaction forever.
That sense, that wailing build a nest
in all hearty emotions anonymously.
Then so many ages have gone by
under the rule of the anonymous insect.
Many years later Aryabhatta first named it ‘0’
which still lies asleep in our hearts.
And whenever it gets a scope,
it just leaps and bounds in season and out of season
like some newly-born cub of a ferocious animal,
and burns and gnaws at our torn, timid hearts
in the cremation ground of nightmares.

The Senses are Engaged Only in Sense-luxury

          Everyday light shines somewhere or other,
          but we don’t have any eyesight
          to see the light.
          Everyday flowers bloom somewhere or other
          but we don’t have any sense of smell
          to smell them.
          Every night the stars talk much about life,
          but we don’t have time enough
          to listen to them.
          Every night, every morning
how much music is sung by some voice or other!
But our heart is not pleased with it,
though many materials are there to be pleased.
Everyday some new scene or other is created,
but it lies nearly invisible to us.
Everyday how many events beyond senses
happen escaping our senses!
But we don’t have any super senses either
to perceive them.
Our senses are engaged only in sense-luxury
throughout all the time of our life;
so great life turns its back on us in a fit of pique.
In the pungency of artificial light,
the light of great life seems to us much nasty.

The Loving Male

Though you say, ‘Dunno’
          you leave in that phrase
          your intoxicating fragrance;
          I can’t but be mad,
          I can’t but be inebriated,
          as I am a loving male.
          Only a loving male can be mad
          or inebriated
          while others can’t understand its meaning.
          And those who understand
          but are not lovers,
          are deceivers, are stone-hearted.

          Though you say, ‘No’
          you smear carefully
          over the word
          the forbidden invitation.
          I can’t but respond
          as I am a loving male.
          I hear in it
          the call of churning the sea up.
          Though the sharks are there,
          no lover treads the invitation
          under his feet.
          And those who do or dread to churn up
          are not the loving males, but other males.

The Life of Leaves

In the spring gone by
when all the leaves of this forest
had just been born,
the sunlight has since been kissing them ceaselessly.
Then summer, the rainy season,
autumn---
have come and gone.
Nobody but the sunlight has touched them
so intimately,
though the rain has come and soaked them sometimes
like a deserting lover,
though the autumn has come and covered them
with a coverlet like a querulous neighbor,
though the wind has come and made them sway
like a juvenile friend.
Hereafter, past their childhood, adolescence, youth
when they have now reached the doorway of old age,
still the sun alone meets them
and caresses them out of immense love
just like a life-partner.
Now they are fallen leaves;
yet the sun comes to dry away their pangs
so that they can reach the final destination
and can lie in peace hereafter.

An Untimely Invitation

As many times the waves have lapped
over the two banks of the river
as many times the two banks have unified
to steer the boat to the quay of your love
as you have stayed at the distant bank
and now when there is no high tide
no upstream flow for navigation
is it the time for you
to say— I love you— in such a way
to cross the dead river
to beseech in such a loving way
to walk hand in hand
we can’t revive the lost love
in our eyes
though you and I long to
now time doesn’t any more
time chains love over again
with which none has to do anything
I just go on my way and you on yours
many loves end in such a stab of pity
on the ramshackle fiddle
the tune of pain plays
that time wailings alone overflow
this and that bank of the dead river

When the Moon Swings in the Lap of the Night

When the moon swings in the lap of the night,
when the water of the river is drunk,
when the rain showers just for creation
in the secluded room of confinement,
when the sun keeps its hostile light busy elsewhere,
when the scavengers sleep in the silent nests,
why are you still far away- millions of miles away?
Who knows what you do alone in the timid steps?
But then I burn at heart alone in the Nidhubon.
